Yi Li, PhD

Asian man holding plants standing in a greenhouse

The Li lab has been working on developing methods for cannabis genetic transformation and for nanoparticle-based delivery of DNA and RNA molecules into hemp cells. Success in one or both approaches will enable us to use modern molecular tools for genetic improvement of cannabis plants for various applications. Also, using bioinformatics and other techniques, the Li lab has identified gene targets important for genetic improvement of cannabis, including the ones involved in CBD and THC biosynthesis, and using genome-editing technologies to introduce desirable traits such as high CBD and low THC into cannabis plants. The Li lab is highly experienced in developing new plant breeding technologies and plant varieties.  The lab has developed seedless fruit technology, male or female sterility technology, gene deletor technology, transgene-free genome-editing technology, plant graft union formation enhancement technology, insect- and rot-resistant plant technology, and has also bred sterile, non-invasive burning bush (Euonymus alatus) and low mowing frequency lawn grasses.
